Sally Bingham of Interfaith Power and Light on CNN

A request from Interfaith Power and Light

For the first time in many years, Congress is close to passing an energy bill with significant provisions to curb greenhouse gases.
In June, the Senate passed a bill significantly increasing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for automobiles – 35 mpg by 2020.
In August, the House passed a bill requiring electric utilities to obtain more power from clean, renewable sources—such as the wind and sun.
Now, the two versions of the Energy Bill must be reconciled and passed in both houses of Congress.
Unfortunately, the auto and oil industry are mobilizing their lobbyists in an attempt to keep these two critical provisions out of the final legislation.
You can tell your senators and representatives that America’s new Energy Bill must include a 35 mile per gallon fuel economy standard and a 15 per cent renewable electricity standard —anything less is unacceptable.

It takes three minutes (or less) to help us send a strong message that a strong Energy Bill is a priority for the faith community.

Green Faith

This week's Newsweek has a brief story called "God is Green." Here is an excerpt.

In San Francisco, an outfit called Interfaith Power & Light, started by an Episcopal priest named Sally Bingham, has 4,000 churches, synagogues, mosques and even a group of Jains (people who follow an ancient Indian religion) on its roster. Its state chapters teach congregations how to conserve energy, skills it hopes they'll also apply at home. The Quakers who, not surprisingly, have been at the forefront of the green-church movement, are seeing a surge of interest in the intersection between faith and ecology.

Science and Religion: Together Again

Submitted for your consideration: another editorial on science and religion uniting to solve the problem of climate change. This one is co-authored by The Rev. Sally Bingham, founder of Interfaith Power and Light, who will be the featured speaker at our October 16 Sacred Trust Forum in West Hartford, Connecticut. Here is an excerpt:

Science and religion have proved to be capable of independently inspiring social change and reshaping global consciousness. Just imagine what these forces could do together, in a united effort to reverse the damage we have done to our planet.
